My DVD player won't play a VCD a CD disc,

I've downloaded TMPGEnc DVD Author, but my PC won't open the program because of the processer on the PC.

Are there any other free programs that can change the following?

change the audio to a 48Khz sampling rate as a VCD uses 44.1Khz, which is not DVD compliant.

    Thanks in advance

DVD Author is for DVDs. Get a copy of Tmpgenc 2 or 3. Convert to VCD then use Nero to burn
Jagabo, please do not reply to this post. Thank you.

What is your problem exactly? You can't play ANY VCD at all or you can't play a specific VCD? If the latter, is this an Indian VCD by any chance? You should be aware that Indian VCDs are copy protected to prevent PCs from playing them. By the way, what kind of CPU do you have because unless it's a 486 or maybe an 8+ year old Pentium, Tmpgenc shouldn't care.

Use VCDgear to convert the *.DAT VCD file(s) on the VCD (look in the MPEGAV directory on the VCD disc) to *.MPG file(s) and then demux them. BeSweet (or BeSweet GUI which is easier to use) can then convert from 44.1 Khz to 48 Khz. Other audio editors can do this type of conversion too.

What is the make/model of the DVD player

Some early models would ONLY play DVD's (and originals at that)
That's from the time when DVD burners were around £800
    and no-one had one

I have an old Sony and Panasonic, both of which will not play either VCD or SVCD
    Don't worry.......we'll be alright...

Once you've used VCDgear to convert the file do you have to use different software to demux them?

According to the sources i've checked, there should be no problem playing VCDs and SVCDs on your machine.
Unfortunately this means something more technical is at fault.
Check the VCD using Explorer or something similar, and post the list of folders it contains.
If any of the required folders is missing this may cause it to glitch on a standalone player where the PC may not be worried.
How did you come by this VCD - is it a self-created disc - what did you use to create/burn it etc
Please provide as much info as poss.
    Don't worry.......we'll be alright...

  12. Get the trial version of TMPGenc DVD author 1.5 or 1.6 and try it out. You just add the VCDs to it and it will convert the audio when you go to make the DVD.

Thanks for the followup info it was helpful.

First of all, yes, you need to demux with a different program than VCDGear. TMPGenc can do it. MPEGVCR can do it. There are probably freeware programs that can demux too, but I'm not sure about those.

I think I now know what your problem is. It appears from the original post that you are saying that the DVD player won't play VCDs or audio CDs. Is this right? If so, it means that the laser that plays CD discs (it's different from the laser used for DVDs) is broke. It's not worth repairing if that's the case and you should buy a new player.

At 9+ years old, I suppose your PC may be too old (or more exactly "underpowered in terms of CPU") to run TMPGenc.
