    Hello,

I need to convert my Video_TS file to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. I am using cuttermaran to edit the video, but it only edits MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.
I could also settle for a program that converts a DVD to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. Either way will work.
    A free program of course.
I've searched the Tools section, I couldn't find what I need.

    Thanks.

The video ts file contains vob's Those should already be mpg2. Use GSpot to analyze and render them to be sure.

Each vob can be recoded to mp2v and mpva with VLC if needed.

I have a dvr that makes mp4 video with mp3 audio. I use VLC to recode the audio to mp4 for certain apps that want expensive extra licenses for mp3 audio.

Is there a guide somewhere to how to use VLC to recode?
There's no "save as" on the file menu.

    True, but...
Using VLC to re-encode involves tricky command line stuff (not everyone's favorite thing) and in my very limited experience using VLC to encode/convert does not always work.

What "certain apps" require "expensive extra licenses for mp3 audio"? Most people just use LAME for encoding to MP3 if they want to be legal and don't want to pay for a license. MP3 licenses are really cheap, probably because the patent holders (Fraunhofer) know if they don't make it cheap, no one will ever buy one because too many ways exist to "illegally" encod to MP3. It's worth pointing out that MP4 audio (I guess you mean AAC) is supported on almost no standalone DVD players, making it a no-go for a lot of people. At this time I regard using AAC audio as a poor choice for that very reason, but that's just my half-baked opinion.
