I understand the concept of just swapping hard drives (and apparently the Polaroid is so friendly, you don't need to do anything special, it sees the new drive), but how exactly do you go about adding external devices to the unit? I'm not seeing any kind of USB2 or Firewire output from it?
That little black box looks interesting. While I could probably figure it out, given enough time, I'm not too sure how you've gone about rigging up your setup. How does that work? Is the burner an extra burner, or a replacement?
As somebody else has mentioned, I've modded machines before (LiteOn 5001, for example).

lordsmurf - review this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=736151
It documents my efforts from the beginning of the project to the enclosure that is posted above. It's a really cheap upgrade. Less than $100 all in.
The only trick is reversing one IDE cable which is discussed in the thread I posted. Let me know if you have any questions. -
You say on AVS that Polaroid has weaker then expected copy protection scheme. Could you comment?

The Polaroid also does not see "copy once" or "copy never" flags from cable systems. If you notice in the picture above the Polaroid sits on top of a Toshiba. Toshiba is notorious for picking up flags. With the Polaroid staged between the cable box and the Toshiba the Toshiba does not pick up any flags. Nor copy protection if I use the Polaroid as a filter to the Toshiba based on my link posted i'e. same results with the Toshiba when the Polaroid is used as a filter. -

The drives have to be IDE. I had trouble with a 500GB Maxtor. It may have been the size or that particular Maxtor. Not sure. I have been sticking with 250GB drives because anything bigger is almost too big to organize. Plus the 250's offer the most value for $'s right now.

You posted some pics on AVS would it be possible to have them here (w/o signing up with AVS)? I'd be especially interested in mainboard layout (detailed pics).
-
you need to be a member to see the pic's at AVS.
btw. The recorder isn't available at Wal-Mart,or WALMART.COM anymore -
@Next
Polaroid is using a Domino chipset. In that regard is there a difference in rec. quality between Toshiba and Polaroid? How would you compare those two. Finally, if Polaroid is doing so well why Toshiba in your rig? -
There are photos of the inside of the 2001G in this sticky.
https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=279460
Not sure if they are as detailed as Next's which I have not seen.
[edit]This recorder is no longer at Walmart.com either as noted by MJA. -
I bought mine at Walmart yesterday. There is another one or two still on the shelf. So it's not completely gone everywhere, not yet.
Inxess, Toshiba is good too. While it does not use LSI, Toshiba has always been a quality machine. It's just the the newer XS-series machines with adjustable IRE are that much better. The LSI machines are still better for noise removal.
I'm looking at this one:

Seagate is quieter, better quality, long warranty... that would be my choice. I've read someone has installed Seagate either in Pioneer or Polaroid, no problem. (AVS Forum). As a test I would put any drive that you may have around your desk just to see... 250 GB is more then enough unless someone build a jukebox. Imagine editing/copying all that crap... 1 month worth of work and full time! Smaller HD forces you to backup sooner and I have no plans to upgrade my HD. 100 hrs in PVR and DVDR is just more then enough.
Again, what makes "next" keep the two (DVDR's). I wonder what is it if not rec. quality etc. -
I put a 500 GB Seagate drive in my Pioneer 531H to replace a Western Digital 80 GB Caviar drive. The noise levels seem about the same but it does have a five year warranty.
The specification I checked most carefully with the replacement drive was the current consumption. The larger drives demand more current from the power supply of the recorder so there is a risk of increasing the mean time before failure. I measured the temperatures of the components that run hot in the power supply, including the supplies to the hdd ( +5V, -12V ) before and after to make sure there was no significant increase. -
Yeah, I want a Seagate too, was checking out his one:

But I'd prefer to get one when it's on sale in the $75-80 range.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

With the external Sony DVD burner I can write from the HDD to the burner in about 10 minutes which is twice as fast as the stock Polaroid burner. Finalizing takes about a minute. So if I want portability via DVD disc it is a very fast process.
Why Polaroid and Toshiba? They are both very different machines. Both with excellent PQ. The Polaroid offers the hardware flexability I want. The Toshiba offers every feature imaginable in a comsumer DVD recorder. -

I'm new here although I've been reading posts for a while.
I saw the tread on this Polaroid box and got pretty jazzed about it. The local Walmart had four or five in stock so I dashed over and grabbed one.
After making room for the little machine, rerouting cables and doing a small bit of cussing I had everything set up. Imagine my surprise when I was greeted by horizontal scrolling and severe tearing of the image.
I called Polariod CS and found that the 2001G isn't compatable with ANY HD reciever, end of discussion.
Talk about an exercise in futility.
Can you guys tell me if any of the current crop of DVD recorders with a native hard drive will work with an HD reciever?
Thanks a bunch. -

This is extremely unique for a HDD recorder. Perhaps one of a kind.
Read better next time. -
You mean record in High Definition? You didn't read the sticky at the top of the forum on DVD recorders....it says no, you can't do that. Best wait to see if a High Definition recorder will be released that is able to do that......
-
Interesting... this little machine won't even display the image from an NON HD channel from my Dish HD receiver.
The pass-through is great, picture image is perfect but once I turn the recorder on the image scrolls to the left at a remarkable rate.
Oh, well. I guess I'll pay the big bucks for the Dish ViP 622.
Thanks! -
