Depends on input audio format (mp3 is no good) and how the recording is done.
Take a look at AnalogX vocal remover to get an idea of what can be done. Don't expect miracles.

    Yes, it's possible.

Typically, the vocal track is dead-centre in the stereo mix. If you invert one of the stereo channels and then create a mono signal (i.e., create left minus right or right minus left), often the vocal will disappear. This is how a lot of karaoke machines work.

(It's also why you have to be careful when creating stereo soundtracks that may be heard on mono equipment - if the left and right are out of phase, often the dialog (vocal) disappears).

So, anyway, if you have stereo source material, you need to:

    1. Invert one of the channels
    2. Add the two channels together to create an out-of-phase mono signal

If the vocal has any chorus effects (for example), these may still be heard but most of the vocal will disappear.

Also, if it's not a big-label artist, contact the artist. You'd be surprised what you can get just by... ...asking.
