I recently experimented with creating an XVCD format disc using the guidelines from the XVCD section of this website. I used a resolution of 720x480 and a bitrate of 2500. My source was captured using StudioDV 1.26a. Encoding was done with TMPGeng. CD was burned with Nero. Interestingly, the size of the file created was very close to the size of the SVCD format file created form the same source. The frame resolution seemed to be pretty high, but the motion looked really 'jumpy' (for lack of a better term) as the video progressed. Is this typical of XVCD format? Or, is it an anomaly with my DVD deck (RCA RC5240P)?

Either it is the bitrate that is too high for your player to cope with or maybe it is an interlacing issue.
Does it play OK on your computer? If so then the bitrate is too high for your player to cope with.
It may be an interlacing issue. In the past, when I have converted NTSC films to PAL, I have to deinterlace it a certain way for the motion to appear smooth (I forgot which setting I used, but experiementing with them is best).
Other than that, it may be that your player doesnt like the CDR media that you use.
If you still cant get it to work, post your TMPGenc settings along with what format (inc. parameters) you store the video on your HDD and also your source video format including the parameters.

I had a similar problem when I encoded my 1st SVCD, and this is what I was told, and it worked: in TMPGEnc, under the 'Advanced' tab there is an option for 'field order'. To fix the jumpiness, just change it to the opposite of what it is. Should be an option for 'even' or 'odd' for the field order. Also, for me, the jumpiness occurred throughout the movie any time there was motion in the scene. It was not progressive, as you state yours was. But if you haven't solved the problem yet, it's worth a shot.
