I have some dvd-backup avi files (not made by me) which have audio commentary. I don't want to hear the audio commentary, but when playing the file WMP automatically plays them. VLC doesn't, but I prefer watching in WMP - how can I turn them off? I'm using the latest K-lite codec pack with FFvideo/audio. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Run them through VirtualDub Mod and delete the extra audio file, save out with Direct stream copy with audio and video.

would this be re-encoding the entire file? (I have several files like this and was looking more for the ideal "turn setting off" solution). would it decrease the quality of the file?

Just install the Morgan Stream Switcher. That will allow you to choose one or the other of the audio tracks when using Windows Media Player, without getting the sound from both at the same time.

Although why anyone in his right mind would consciously choose WMP as their default player is beyond me. Have you even tried out some of the other (much better) players? I prefer Media Player Classic.
And no, redwudz's solution doesn't involve reencoding the file, just removing one of the tracks and keeping the video and the other audio track the same. -

and I don't need to have some hideous 1995 eye-sore like WMP classic in my view.
Media Player Classic is a different player than is the Windows Media Player Classic (6.4 version). And although MPC is consciously modeled after the look of WMP Classic, and won't win any awards for looks, I always thought the function of a video player was to ... play videos.

Media Player Classic has its own stream switcher. Right-click the screen->Filters, the bottom one with the location of the file and then it'll show you the streams available. Click on a different one and either wait 10 seconds or so, or click on a slightly different place on the slider to force it to switch. That may not have made much sense, but if you play with it, I think you'll see. Right-click the screen->Filters is the main thing.

Audio streams should show up under audio (play-->audio or rightclick-->audio). No need to access the filters, although I guess you may need to go into the filter preferences and block MMS.

Thanks celtic_druid. Your way sounds easier. I realized I hadn't switched audio tracks on an AVI for a long time, didn't have any with which to test, and only had a vob with 2 audio tracks handy. After playing around for a couple of minutes, what I described was how I got it to work. I can still only switch vob audio via the filter, but I guess for an AVI going through audio works.
