    Hi,

I have a PAL DVD backup (I do not have the DVD disk) that has a pretty strange effect. Once I play it, the picture quality changes almost every second. Firt, it is perfectly good but in a second it gets blured but after that it gets again perfectly good and again blured. This goes on and on and on.

I would appreciate your advice what it is and how to fix it. Thank you!

If you mean the image pulsates then you have a backup done with a transcoder that didn't do low bitrates too well. DVD Shrink used to do this before Deep Analysis and AEC was introduced. Basically you would get a nice clean image on the I-frame, then it would become progressively softer through the GOP until the next I-frame, when it would sharpen up again.

If this is what you have, then you are basically SOOL. There is nothing you can do to fix it.

    Yes ... and ?

You havent told us the method of viewing here ...

    1 : example ...

This effect is similar with some setups where the dvd player's output , is connected to a stereo vcr , because the tv dosent have rca input's ... in this case the stereo vcr cannot handle the video signal correctly .

This affect's both dvd content , with or without macrovision protection .

In this case you need a video stabalizer to interface between dvd player and the vcr to control the issue ... or buy a combo unit ... less clutter and cable's .

    ---------------

The "poor transcoder" factor , is extremly rare ... and is more caused by incorrect user input settings during the backup phase .
Most would atleast playback the final result's on the pc before burning to media .

    ---------------

Issue with media type used ... if from dvd player , could it not be a possibilty that you are playing from dvd+ ... some have issue with the play back of this format .

    --------------

If you use a combo switch of any kind , check the connections are a tight fit ... loose or poor connections can also cause similar problem's .

    Thanks.

It is on my PC and I watched it on the monitor screen. I never tried it on TV as I assume it will be just the same.

  6. My first thought is to agree with guns1inger. It's also called a "pumping" effect, caused by removal of DCT data and therefore accumulated errors. In your description you say it happens almost every second, which is roughly what one might expect in a GOP (Group of Pictures).

Is "pumping" or "pulsating" an apt description?
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
