I've posted in the Audio section regarding this, but the responses have been a bit, um, sophisticated for me. I'd like to capture from my HD DVR and keep the 5.1 surround sound when I author a DVD from it. I'm used to using VirtualDub/TMPGEnc to capture/compress, and I've successfully used Ulead VideoStudio to combine PCM (WAV) two-channel audio files with the video compressed in TMPGEnc without audio. I have an Audigy2 sound card with a firewire (1394) input. My HD DVR (Scientific American) has a 1394 output. It also has a coaxial digital audio output and an optical digital audio output. The manual that came with the DVR does not address such esoteric subjects as this. Does anyone have a 'newbie' description of how to capture the audio (or audio/video) from the DVR to the hard drive and author a DVD keeping the 5.1 surround? Is that not possible at this time? Should I be patient until the sound card companies catch up with the HDTV multi-channel audio world?

P.S. Someone mentioned an MPEG2-TS file as what might be created by capturing using firewire. Any 'newbie' style help with what to do with that would be appreciated as well. Can I use VirtualDub to capture the MPEG2-TS file? What do I do with it after it's on my hard drive?

Please be gentle with me. I ride the video creation short bus.
