I recently got the Philips DVP5140/37 DVD player and I can't figure out how to display closed captioning on it. Is it possible? I've looked in the manual but I didn't see anything about it although it's possible I overlooked it.

  2. You don't select to display captioning on it. Your tv makes the captions.

    I have that player.

If you want to see subtitles, push that subtitle button.

I'm not familiar with this model. Is it a portable with its own screen or is it a regular DVD player that has to be hooked up to a TV?

If it's a regular player, you don’t need to do anything to its settings to view closed captions. Simply turning on your TV’s closed caption function should display them, if they are present. Closed caption data is encoded in the video portion of the recording, and shouldn’t ever be stripped out. The only exception would be if your DVD player has some sort of intrinsic defect regarding closed captions.

If it's a portable, and doesn't have a feature to enable viewing closed captions on its screen, you have a real problem. The only way to see them would be to hook it up to a TV. My only other suggestion would be to see if the manual can be downloaded from Philips website in Adobe Acrobat format. If so, you could try doing a search using your computer.

I ran across this today while going through some web pages I had saved for future reference. If you are still having problems, maybe it will help. I haven't tried it myself.

This was posted by hunter99 in September of 2006 in a different CC-related thread.

...Also the signal to the TV must be interlaced not progressive. That screwed me up
for a while, had the player set to Progressive.
