I think this is were things are going wrong with me.
My vob files are 1gig and after virtual dub recompresses it to 175 meg could that be why I'm getting blocks and blur.

Would it be best to recompress it to about 700 meg file

This is my first rip trying my best to post properly

sorry for any inconvieance in my post

    It all depends on:
    A) How long the movie is
    B) What quality suits you

VirtualDub, while a great program, is an incredibly poor choice for anyone but the most experienced of users to use in re-encoding a movie. If you want to encode to Divx (your posts don't say, so I'm guessing that's what you're doing), there are better programs out there. I'm using Dr. Divx (http://www.drdivx.com) and I'm really pleased with it. Gordian Knot would be another possibility. There are guides to using Gordian Knot at http://www.doom9.net.

Experiment with different bitrates on different types of motion/contrast.
Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

My suggestion is AutoGK or avi.net. Select Target quality (in AutoGK) and try different settings until you reach a file size/quality that meets your needs.
