Is there a tool that allows a user to draw a box and report back the exact frame size? I'd like to use such tool to check if my source video dimensions are correct or not. When played back the source video in Windows Media Player, there is a thin black border to the left and thicker one on top. I'm wondering if the borders are affecting my outputs.

    I did the following:
    1. Captured VHS using a standalone DVD recorder.
    2. Extracted mpg file from DVD using MPEG Video Wizard.
    3. Used SUPER to output 640x480 h.264/AAC in mov container.
    4. Used TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress to output 640x480 wmv file.

When I playback the output videos in Quicktime and WMP, the display aspect ratio on WMP appears to be slightly off. Enough to make a person's face fatter. I didn't notice this right away until I compared them side by side. I just can't get the exact dimensions in wmv file as in mov file, which I think is correct. So, I'm wondering if I need to do something to the source file before feeding it to TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress, in order to output a wmv encoded file that looks the same as the source video.

Take a screenshot of the video and open in a picture program ? CTRL-I in Wmp or turn off video accereration and use the prtscn-button.

Thanks, Baldrick. That's a really good idea. Such a simple solution. I just captured the actual video portion from WMP and IrfanView tells me that the captured size is 630x480. Uh oh. Maybe this explains why the encoded wmv looks slightly flat. I'm not sure why mov conversion looked okay.

Is it a typical problem of VHS to standalone DVD recorder conversion? Thanks.

I've transfered a few tapes to my Pioneer standalone. When viewed on the computer the edges look ragged and uneven, but when burned and viewed on a TV they look fine due to overscan.
