  1. Hi,

    I have Windows XP Pro.

I have an .avi file that's too large to fit on an svcd. When I have this problem, I've always been able to reduce the size of the file by using AutoGK (v 2.40). Today, I can't plug in any .avi file and set the size to a smaller one without receiving the message:

    Avisynth open failure:

Script error: there is no function named "DirectShowSource" (L:\17 C-H\agk_tmp\_.avs, line 7.
The folder name changes with each file that's in a different folder.

I have Avisynth v 2.5.7 installed in my pc. I also have directshowsource in folder Avisynth/src/plugins and directshowsource.dsp in folder Avisynth/src/plugins/directshowsource. AutoGK still converts .vob files to .avi files with no problems.

I uninstalled AutoGK and Avisynth and downloaded and installed new ones but it didn't help.

Can you tell me what the problem is and how to fix it?

You would need to open the dsp file, compile the plugin and then put in the AVISynth plugin dir. Could also download a binary instead of source.

You got me worried because I just updated to 2.5.7 this morning and although I had done a couple of quick tests, DSS was not one of them. Thankfully it works for me.

Are you running the latest 2.5.7 or one of the release candidates ?

Can you show us your actual script ?

Try AviSource or AviFileSource instead. It is possible that your system uses a VFW codec for handling that type of file.

BTW, I had no visible bugs in my 2.57RC1 so far; often use DirectShowSource for RMs, Mov's and WMVs.

  5. Hi celtic_druid,

    How do I do this?

compile the plugin and then put in the AVISynth plugin dir. Could also download a binary instead of source
When I downloaded and installed Avisynth 2.5.7, I didn't uninstall my previous version, 2.0.8, unless 2.5.7 automatically uninstalled it when it was installed. I did uninstall my previous version of AutoGK when I installed v 2.40

  6. Hi gunslinger,

I don't know what the difference is between the latest 2.5.7 and a release candidate, but I downloaded Avisynth_257.exe from:

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57023

  7. Hi Alexander,

AutoGK doesn't allow me to choose which file it uses. It doesn't have the option to use AviSource or AviFileSource, but thanks for trying.

  8. If fixing this problem turns out to be difficult, I'll revert back to the previous versions. They worked well with no adjustments needed. I usually upgrade to the newer versions of files/programs when their stable versions are released, but I've never had problems with the newer versions.

Could this problem be caused by the fact that I don't have Avisynth installed in the same folder as AutoGK? It was never a problem with the older version. In my Program Files folder, I created a folder and named it Video Programs a few years ago. I then create folders inside Video Programs for each video program that I install, i.e., codecs, filters, avisynth, video players, etc.

AviSynth2.5.7 should have installed itself in a folder named "Avisynth2.5" and I think this is required for it to be able to find plugins in the plugin sub-folder.

So where did the source come from if you downloaded the exe and not Avisynth_257_src.zip?

  11. I downloaded both AviSynth_208.exe and avisynth_208_src.zip from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57023.

Due to another post above where gadgetguy said

AviSynth2.5.7 should have installed itself in a folder named "Avisynth2.5" and I think this is required for it to be able to find plugins in the plugin sub-folder.
I installed both of the files in several places just to see what would happen. The default folder for installation of avisynth_208_src was Documents and Settings/owner, so I installed them there. The default folder for AviSynth208.exe was C:. I also installed both of them into the AutoGK folder and Video Programs folder. It didn't help. I received a message that said:

    VirtualDub Error
    Avisynth open failure
LoadPlugin: "C\PROGRA~\VIDEOP~1\AUTOGK~1.40\DGMPGDec\DGDecode.dll" is an an Avisynth 1.- plugin (C:\- DVD Rips\agk_tmp\_.avs.line1)
I have no idea what the message means except that maybe avisynth needed a plugin, but I had no plug-in to give it.

So I uninstalled AutoGK and the avisynth exe and src files and went to http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads and downloaded and installed AutoGK full package - Mirror 1 1980643. Now AutoGK works fine again.

I started this post in the newbie section because, even though I've used AutoGK for a long time now, I use it because it's automatic. I don't know anything about compiling, binary, filters, how to show a script, VFW codec, directshowsource, etc. I know how to download, install, and click on start. If the program asks me for something, I try to get it for it, but nothing that I installed was satisfying the new AutoGK program and avisynth files that I downloaded from the first site.

I don't know what the difference is between the two AutoGK files that I downloaded from the different sites but one works for me and the other doesn't.

  13. As I said in my last post, I found an AutoGK program that works.

But I would like to add that, at forums, directions are given in computerese that translates to Chinese for a newbie.

I'm a Mathematician. Computing the volume of water in a tipped glass is first year calculus that is taught to an average high school senior, but it is of no help in answering a question regarding the amount of water that should be added to a recipe for someone who hasn't taken calculus.

In other words, too many assumptions are made that a newbie has taken calculus, which negates the name "newbie."
