This came up recently in another thread...
A couple of the 'free' Reg cleaners try to scare you into upgrading to a paid version.
Some that were recommended were Abexo, Eusing, and Crap Cleaner (really!:]); Google or search here for that back thread. -
I use Registry Mechanic.
Here's an independent review at www.download.comThere is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Download and use Rdilly BEFORE you run any registry cleaner. 1 Click reg backup and restore.

RegSeeker also allows backup function. Compared it to CC & RegMech, & it seems to find more junk to fix...All are good apps.

RegSupreme Pro consistently finds more errors and invalid entries than anything else I've ever used. Also backs up before repair /clean is performed after the initial scan.

It doesn't matter which registry cleaner you are taking about, the more aggressive the settings, the more likely the software will clean away something it shouldn't. To be foolproof and precise, you really need to study the registry intimately.

slacker ... true ... but that's why you need a backup in the first place ... if the end result is a screw up , you can atleast return the system back to previous state ... and try again ... there is no need to study the registry ... simple seach with google using key value will help most understand what a registery item and event dose ... from here ... they can make a valid choice as to keep or remove the item .
Run regedit ... locate folder item containing key / value ... copy key name ... and google search it will show result's ... it's then a little digging as not all result's are acurate ... some people have no idea what they are talking about online these day's ... -
I use an older version of Registry Mechanic. CCleaner is also very handy to have in your arsenal as well.

it does show what the entries are but it means nothing to me, will it be unsafe to just repair the lot
-
Without reading through all 700ish entries, the only way is to back up the registry, repair and see how it goes.
If you're really worried, have the right software and a spare hard-drive - back up the entire drive with the Operating System on (invariably the C: drive). There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

I've had a nasty intermittant startup problem, which I suspected was the results of a failed install of Norton Save/Restore. Uninstalled the partial restore at the failure and deleted files.
Downloaded regseeker used its registry search feature and found 22 reg entries associated with Norton Save/Restore. Deleted them with regseeker and so far the problem has not occurred. Other reg cleaners never noted the entries which referred to non-existant files. -
thanks for all your input, I might just hit repair all knowing that I can undo it if something goes wrong
