It's a power supply that runs the player off the mains instead of using the batteries. Many portable players have these as an option, though you may have to purchase it separately if it's not included with the player.

Most portable players come with an adapter too recharge the battery ... and too play dvd's direct from adapter supply .
It would be lame to get a unit without this device ... it's deemed as an unsaleable item under au law and fair trading .
For in car , you need a proper adapter ... not a cheap and nasty one ... just because they say they can on the packaging dosent alway's guarantee they will , or how long they will last before curling up and dying on you .
In this case , you might be looking for an inverter , with "full sinewave rectification" ... esspecially if using a notebook / laptop in car ...
Half sinewave rectified units will eventually destroy the batteries in any portable device ... I hate missleading information from some site's that say they dont , but believe me ... they do and will kill the batteries sooner or later ... and some batteries are not cheap or easy to remove and replace ... yet alone "get a replacement" asap when needed .
