I bought this DVD player http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DVP-NS355-Multi-region-DVD-Player/dp/tech-data/B000244ZS2 which supports both PAL and NTSC. I just bought 21 DVDs in NTSC and they play B+W on the TV (but colour on the laptop). I tried another NTSC disk from someone else and it plays B+W.
Any ideas?

I have players and there are players that will convert video formats so you are not limited by what your tv will display. -
You can download the manual here -> http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/3089857521.zip although I assume you have one. If you read the section on trouble-shooting, it actually has an entry for B & W playback, and says you will get this if your TV is NOT NTSC capable.
I have players that will convert formats, and a TV that accepts all formats. I have my players output the native format of the disc, because even brand name players can do conversions badly.Read my blog here.
