    Okay quick question...

I've got this 2.35:1 Pal DivX file I need to convert to NTSC for a project. I tried mpeg streamclip and selected 16:9 mode - which sorta worked. It made the video 1.85:1 but not the full 2.35:1. Is there something I need to make sure I'm doing to properly do the conversion?

    Thanks!

For 4:3 Letterboxed NTSC, you need to resize to 720 x 280, then add 200 lines of black top and bottom, then encode.

For 16:9 NTSC you need to resize to 720 x 372, then add 104 lines of black top and bottom.

In the PC world I would do this with avisynth, then encode. Don't know how you do it in the Mac world. I have the windows version of streamclip, but I haven't had time to install and play yet.

I think guns1inger is mistaken. Resize to 720x368, and then you need to pad the top with 56 lines of black as well as the bottom with 56 lines of black (368 + 56 + 56 = 480 pixels high).
Here's how I do it when I convert an avi to mpeg2 for dvd.
Download and open this disk image.
Drop your avi onto the Video Convertor v4 droplet
Click NTSC-FILM for 23.98fps or NTSC for 29.97fps
Click 16:9 for the aspect ratio
    Resize to 720x368
    Pad top 56
    Pad bottom 56
If your avi has mp3 audio, click "AC3 stereo"
If your avi has AC3 audio, click "copy" to just copy the audio stream over
A Terminal window will open and show the progress of your encode.
When complete, you will have a dvd-ready mpeg2 video file.

i was hoping there was a way to do this in mpeg streamclip because I need to be able to set in and out points.

but i'll try the other app in the meantime.

I'm not too familiar with Final Cut or even the DV format. Would it still be a 720x480 video with matting at the top and the bottom that you are looking for?
