How do I know if my Philps 5140/37 can play packed bitstream?
What firmware version do I need? I believe I need the older firmware version because I read where the newer firmware doesn't have packed bitstream support anymore.

Much to my surprise, my 2+ year old DVP-642 can play packed bitstream with NO firmware updates of any kind since purchase, so I'd venture a guess that it will work for you too. Qpel and MMC are the real killers here for playback with N-VOPs and "custom quantization" being lesser known but further potential problems. Try a packed bitstream disc and see. My limited experience is that while packed bitstream is often blamed for problems, really it's other things (notably Qpel and MMC) that are the REAL problem for playback.
