Hello everyone, I currently have a "HP DVD Writer 300n" which is one of the early drives and is only capable of writing to single layer +R discs. I was thinking of getting a new writer that can do + and -R and write on Dual layer discs.
Is there any dvdwriters that you could recommend that are really good, and work well with verbatim media (as i tend to use verbatims)?
Im tempted to go with the new Sony DRU-830A, but does anyone know if its worth getting?
I would really appreciate your help, Thanx![]()

About 6 months ago I chose Pioneer 111D, which can be cross flashed to 111L if desired, after reading all reviews as well as user problems posted on CDFreaks site, and I'd make the same choice today if I needed another. Pioneer, Benq, NEC and others are available for $35 plus or minus a few dollars from NewEgg. Some customer reviews at the NewEgg site are not so good for the Sony, and I'd avoid it.

Majority of people choose either Pioneer or NEC burners, I've had just NEC but thought I'd give the Pioneers a try
Next time I think I'll go back to NEC burners
No problems with the burner at all, I just prefer NEC over Pioneer, both are on par with each, same with Sony burners, some love them others hate them
In MY opinion, NEC or Pioneer are one of the two best on the market for quality burns and results everytime which is what you need if you intend to 'backup' DVDs or games
For general everyday use, LG offer very good prices and quality
Just do a search for the latest reviews via Google, there are plenty of sites that test DVD drives and report on real world results, with different media types in everyday use, instead of 'ideal' conditions in a lab or test bench -
I prefer the BENQ 1640, 1650 & 1655 dvd burners but they're scarce to find since BENQ sold their optical storage dept. to LITEON. Check out the BENQ, PIONEER, LG, LITEON/SONY, BTC, NEC & PLEXTOR dvd rewriter forums at Cdfreak.com.

Steptoe, have you read the many CDFreaks posts about NEC drives having trouble reading burned -R media? I have a NEC 3520 with that exact problem which is why I replaced it with the Pioneer 111D which I corss flashed to 111L to enable auto bit setting for +R single layer media. Note also the NEC 3540 review rates it below average reading DVD video. Budz Benq suggestion would be my second choice if there's something about Pioneer you dislike.
