i'm totally new to this, i've got a couple of hundred vhs tapes that i collected in the 80's mostly 2nd or 3rd gen music stuff that i taped or traded, i'd like to get them on dvd, reading through the forums it seems the easiest method is to get a decent vhs deck and then record them on a dvd recorder?
so whats a good vhs deck? i'm in the uk and most the tapes are pal
is the panasonic svhs 950b any good?
if i got a dvd recorder with hardrive would i be able to put bits from different tapes onto the hardrive and then burn onto one disc?
i'm hoping to do this for around the £500 mark is this possible or am i dreaming?
and can anyone recommend a dvd recorder?

Same boat here. Try a JVC or Panasonic SVHS deck with tbc and dnr and a jvc dvd recorder with an lsi chip. I would recommend only xp mode and taiyo yuden or sony dvdrs (if they have those in england).

I have a Panasonic twin VHS and DVD Recorder / Player with which you dont have to do much more than put the VHS in one slot, press a dubbing button and it copies everything direcly from one to the other (or so the manual says, I havnt tried it). One later version (and more widely compatible than mine) is DMR-EZ45V but there are variety of others, readily available in the UK and I expect used earlier ones are on Ebay, etc.

Just a heads up on this, but JVC decks with TBC and DNR are very hard to find in the UK. Your best bet, if you want to go down this route, is to look for one on ebay but they will be quite expensive and very rare. Panasonic doesn't have a model, AFAIK, that has Digital Noise Reduction only a tbc.

However, I would add another vote to the Sony DVDRs.

I can't comment on the Panasonic 950b but I have JVC s7965 s-vhs machine with digital noise reduction and I thoroughly recommend it for picture quality; but bare in mind what I have stated above; they are very hard to find now.

As for being able to record, edit and put bits on one DVD: I have a Sony RDR-HX510 (a slightly older machine than is available now; no integrated freeview) and it allows me to do simple edits - usually trimming start and finish or removing adverts - and then dub over to a DVD. I understand that later machines may allow more sophisticated editing.

From a budget of £500, and knowing where to look, I think that would be quite reasonable as prices of DVD hard drive recorders are tumbling.

    Good luck.
