  1. I have a Canon Powershot camera that takes its video in AVI. I'm about to try to edit these in Premiere and I'm having trouble. I thought that if I converted the format to something like Mpg2 it would be easier to edit. However, I'm not wanting to lose quality. What type should I convert it to if any?

    Thanks

It's likely in MJPEG format. I would first try SUPER for conversion as it's easy to set up and use and handles a lot of formats. But no editing options with it.

You should also be able to open it in Windows Movie Maker. You should be able to edit it there. Not a lot of choices for output from it, but DV is probably the lowest loss of the choices available with WMM. From there, you can encode to MPEG-2 with most encoders.

MPEG is not great for editing. DV is much better if you need frame accurate editing. But MPEG will work with a good editor. I use VideoReDo and MPEG-VCR. I'm not sure which format Premier uses.

  3. You may just need to install decoders for the compressed video and audio in the AVI file. Use Gspot or AVICodec to determine what codecs you need, then install them.
