    Im looking for a dvd player that has a built in tv tuner. The reason for this is, i wish to use a hdmi-dvi converter in order to watch dvd's and tv on a lcd monitor. Does such a player exist?

    That's great, thanks for the info.
    I really don't need the HDTV receiver capability, and would prefer a cheaper more widely available one.

    Ideally I would like to find one that can also can play divx files.

    Technically, you are looking for a TV receiver such as a DVR, Tivo, etc. that has a built in DVD player. So the best play to start looking depends on your TV service (antenna/cable/SAT).

    DVD players, as the name implies, are for playing DVD's.

    The TV service is cable (non-digital). TV receiver with DVD playing capabality, that also plays divx would be ideal. Thx for pointing me in the right direction.

    Since you are only needing VCR type support, take a look at the various DVD Recorders: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdrecorders

    If you do ever need digital/pay channels/HD, you will of course need different hardware.
