  1. Is there a dvd player out there that comes with a default firmware or a upgrade you can get from the company that allows you to change the subtitle color, size, and how long it stays on the screen? Allows you to view videos in a letterbox format where you can set the subtitles to only play on top of the black part at the bottom of the video so they are easy to see no matter what scene is on?

Thinking of bringing my current dvd player back because you can't customize anything.

Subtitle display is controlled via the firmware. There aren't any players that I am aware of that allow you to adjust these settings.

As for displaying on the "black bar", no player supports this option. The subtitles must be displayed on the video output. When WS movies are displayed on your TV with black bars, the bars are not part of the video signal, the TV adds them to properly display the WS video signal.

The few movies that you find that do have subtitles on the black bars, are most likely matted in WS. Meaning the black bars are actually part of the video image.

Thanks I don't understand how the Philps DVP 5140/12 and 5960/12 custom firmware can do this then ?

Since subtitles are controlled by the firmware, custom firmware has the subtitle portions altered. It will change the appearance, but it doesn't provide the option for the user to make the adjustments via a menu. There are also custom firmware for the DVP642 that alters the subtitle appearance. All of the changes I have seen affect the font, font color, or background, not the display location.
