I can create avi files with my camera. I'm wondering how one goes about pasting a logo onto the avi file? I've seen some logos that look transparent so that it doesn't distract from the actual video.

What software do you have ?
The best time to do this is during the final encode, rather than encoding an extra time just for the log. If you use an editor and encode from there to mpeg2, the editor will allow you to do this.
For example, if I wanted to do this in Vegas I would do all my editing, then at the end add a new track at the top of the stack. Into this I would load my logo graphic - probably as a png file created in photoshop. I would use Track Motion to position and size it, the set the opacity to get it visible but not annoying. I would then encode, either to a lossless format for later encoding to mpeg2, or by frameserving from the timeline to ProCoder.Read my blog here.

And if you're using AVISynth and you have the logo as a BMP or JPG, you use the Overlay command to place it on top of the video, at whatever place you want, with whatever degree of transparency/opacity you want:

If you want it in only part of the video, then the Trim command can be used to designate the frames for it to be used. -
I have photoshop and paintshop pro for the actual logo creating.
I have several avi files that I have from my digital camera. I'd like to the compress the files and add a logo at the bottom. I'm assuming they are avi files of course since I've only taken video by accident on the recording setting.
I have Nero Recode (I thought I had it, then I didn't but now I see that I do). Not sure if that helps. I DON'T have Vegas...I do have Adobe Premier and After Effects (Thanks to a previous company I worked for going out of business). I have no real experience with any of them though.SmileSmile

Both Premiere and After Effects can do it easily, although I am very rusty on both. The principals I outlined for Vegas will be similar in Premiere, just different terminology in some cases.
What do you want to encode to ?
If Jimmalenko hasn't beaten me to it, here is his guide for using virtualdub to add watermarks -> https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=248307&highlight=logoRead my blog here.

i've just written about one program -VidLogo (by geovid.com)-but in connection with another problem. this software can add logos and watermarks to the video files, and also converts between different video formats (that's so useful too). so many opportunities in the one tool, and it costs not a lot of money (moreover, it has a free trial).

If your AVI files are DV format, you can use our Enosoft DV Processor to do that.
It can even do it during capturing.
It supports full alpha blending with PNG files. Our software uses a unique DV codec engine that only changes the part of the video image that needs to change. It is much, much faster than traditional software.
Currently in beta, it is already in production use by a satellite TV provider for putting logos on a couple of their music video channels.
When released (expected March), it will be free for personal use - no strings attached.
(You do need a PC with a CPU that has SSE2 instructions and Windows XP SP2, x64 or Vista.)John Miller
