    Hi guys!

I was wondering, probably a simple question for you guys...

What is the difference between the Canopus ADVC 100 and the 110?

I tried finding out what the differences were, but I was still unclear.

Thanks for checking this thread out!

The ADVC-100 is a discontinued model. The 110 is the newer one. Some early 100's could disable Macrovision, but mine doesn't.

And I think the 110 uses power from the FireWire cable to power it while the 100 like mine, has a separate power supply.

    Hey redwudz!

    Thanks!

Is Canopus still in business? Do they still make these?

It can be powered by either, nice feature as it eliminates at least one cord. No power adapter included however.

Canopus is very much still in business, www.canopus.com

You can occasionally find a used ADVC-100 on Ebay. Just make sure it comes with a power supply and, of course, that it works. There are also some competing brands that do basically the same thing like the ADS PYRO A/V Link Basic or the DAC-200 FireWire Digital/Analog Video Capture-Converter.

The ADVC units probably still come with no software and a simple page or two of instructions, but there's not much in the way of adjustments anyway.

And a DV camcorder with analog to DV passthrough can also be used for analog to DV conversion.

    Hi guys!

Thanks for the help, it's extremely helpful.

Don't know why I had the feeling they were out of business...I thought I got that drift from a poster somewhere...I guess I assumed wrong

    Thanks again!

Canopus has been acquired by Thomson and will eventually be marketed under the Grass Valley name. Grass Valley Group was acquired by Thomson a few years ago.

Are you sure yours doesn't. I have two of them (an early model and a late model) and they both can disable Macro without any problems.

Macrovision is a form of copy protection found on most commercial VHS movies. You can't copy a tape that has this from one VCR to another and most capture devices like the canopus will detect this "signal" and not allow you to capture the video. Usually giving you an error, blank the video out, or place a bar across it....etc. Anyhow you can disable the macrovision from being detected by the Canopus by holding down the input switch for a few seconds (or something like that, I don't know the exact procedure). This apparenlty does not work on some of the newer 100's and the 110's. There are other ways to get around this such as a TBC.

My ADVC-100 never worked for disabling Macrovision. I believe you hold down the input button for 5 - 10 seconds. But I have a $20 Macrovision box I got years ago that does the job. I didn't have that many commercial VHS tapes with Macrovision, so it was really never an issue.

I use the ADVC mostly for transferring old VHS TV video to disc. I run them through VirtualDub and filter out the noise and edit out the commercials, them frameserve that to TMPGEnc encoder. I convert the audio to AC3 with ffmpeggui, then add the audio and video to TMPGEnc DVD Author and burn.

    Hey guys!

    Thanks, and wow!

Redwudz...sounds complicated. I have an ADVC-100 that I used to use several years ago, and am going to start using again - your process sounds like a lot to learn...I used to just go straight to Vegas Video at the time!

    Thanks guys!

It still works fine to Vegas or any other program that captures DV format*. You say you have one? Use it. What's the problem?

*so long as the program allows DV capture without device control. Some programs want to see tape cue before allowing capture.

    Hey edDV!

I never said there was a problem. I just wanted to know the difference between the two because I was having a problem researching that very thing.

    Just a knowledge post.

    Thanks!

The 100 and 110 are very similar. The new 110 can work off computer power. Power supply is an optional extra. The older 100 had a second set of inputs on the back which I find useful.

I also recall reading the 110 has extra modes for audio only dubs.

I describe some of the ADVC-1xx modes in this post.
