avi files with missing index

I have acquired a few avi files that have missing index.
Virtualdub will play and when I try to save as avi the saved file still has no index.
I tried to fix using "divfix++" but still no index.
Any suggestions on how to reindex these avi files will be appreciated.

I use VD Mod, but the other versions should work the same way. Start VD. Use 'File>Open video file' then at the left bottom of that page, check 'Ask for extended options after this dialog'. Then select your video. A new window will come up. Check 'Re-derive keyframe flags'. That should repair the index. This may take a while.

I think you can save out as a direct copy, but I haven't done this in a while. If not, you may have to re-encode or fast recompress may work.

I tried your recommendations on how to use virtualdubmod to get a new index for avi files and I am sorry to say that I didn't succeed.
I used gspot to check the original file and it reported some faults.
I used gspot to check the new output file and it reported that everything was ok, yet when I tried to play it the little window popped up and said "missing index". Alas, now what.
My goal is to convert these files to mpg but none of the converters will even read these files.

For anyone following this thead:

I finally succeeded in rebuilding the index on these avi files. After many frustrating efforts a little program called "video-fixer 3.23" did it. Virtualdubmod and divfix++ failed to do it.
