[steves]
A drive replacement is not a real problem in a 5005,5045 ore a ilo RHD04, The R04 is a tight fit.
Any LiteOn DVD drive for a PC to 1693s will work on all functions
THE USE of a drive 160, 165, etc and above will work for all functions except Fast Foward, its use will lock up the unit and require an un-plug
Any hack will be in affect however the drive will [might] not be region free
As your unit is likely a UK model you should check for any firmware problems
You said the unit is a 5005 but said it has a 5006 mainboard. [Is this a miss type] -
Thanks for the info , no it wasnt a mistype ,I opened the box to check if the prob was something stuck It is a 5005B manufactured in october 2004. But when opened it said 5006 printed on the main board ,would this mean that firmware would work on this ? for 5006 board that is .
Know of any really cheap drives? -
This site
http://pumapeople.com/liteon/
Would indicate different firmwarefor a 5005 or 5006 But I can-not say fo sure
As an example of the two 5005 I have one is version 1140 [drive 411s] the other1840 [drice 811s] the firmware for each is different. Are they the same except the drive portion? I don't know and at this time have not persued it
Unless someone has replaced the board it would seem the 5006 board is the same as a 5005 and [Should] accept 5005 firmware.
As to the original problem you present I do not feel it would be firmware related Many that have the LiteOn/ilo units have had drive problems with the drive
I felt at one time, such a problem could be solved with a repair but have since replaced 5 of my units DVD drives with PC drives. This has eliminated any problems
As to a replacement or other info on these units [and keeping in mind your 5005b is most likely a UK model]
I feel the info given in my previous post would stand, but have no idea as to availability oy cost
Your 5005 is worth some effort
Check the following sites for problems, and replacement

I feel as Vico1 does.
Actually my question now is, do you have to replace the original drive with a Lite-On brand drive or can you use any brand? I have both a lite-on 832s and a pioneer a05 sitting under my desk, can either of these be used?
Thanks.

I would use a Liteon drive. Your 832s should do the job very well. I do not think the Pioneer will.
You could try it, the 832 is IDE and I think the pioneer is also You will not hurt anything. It will either work or not. Open the case and disconnect the drive and connect the replacement on top of the original [put a piece of cardboard or paper between them.
Go to these sites [same as above] they will explain the process for A inside or outside prociedure
I would be glad to respond to any questions as others would

PS
The mods could be for the ilo units but are the same for the LiteOn
Actually the 5005 is easy My post and pictures covers the ilo RHD04 but is basicly the same for the LiteOn units I have had a 1633 in both 5005 units. Post a question if you want
