>>...is $500 worth it?
In a word... "Hell no."
Before settling on DVDit! PE, I gave SpruceUp, MyDVD, Ulead DVD Studio and VideoPack 5 a try. Well, SpruceUp is now discontinued (and comparatively weak on features unfortunately), MyDVD is basically a hopelessly crippled version of DVDit!, and Ulead DVD Studio is what attempts to be an overly user-friendly product that only succeeded in frustrating me. Forget the "wizard" interface, give me the classic "file/edit/tools" windows-type interface any day.
Anyway, VP5 is the worst of the bunch, for the simple reason that it costs and promises a lot more than the other programs, but does not deliver. Even after installing an update from Roxio's website in Germany, I couldn't overcome basic menu editing problems (for instance, creating true chapter marks for "scene selection" menus).
So, save your $500... and buy DVDit! SE or PE.

PS No, I do not work for Sonic, and after using MyDVD I had to be coerced kicking and screaming into even trying DVDit!. -
I really like videopak 5.
1. its the only program I know that allows you to create video menus instead of boring pic menus.
2. chapter marks are are easy enough to make after you understand the way vp5 thinks (not very intuitive)
although the price is very prohibitive.

making chapters on a VCD SVCD, playing it on a dvd player, don't it pause for a second on every chapter?
-
Well I dont know yet on Video Pack 5 Since it seems to be more complicated than Video Pack4. In VideoPack 4 The Chapters are created by EntryPoints in One Big Mpeg Not several Mpegs. In Video Pack4 ive created 2 vcd's with chapters and works flawlessly even has a menu with a submenu that links to those chapters which is cool but I can't seem to do it in VP5 so i can make SVCD with Chapters and a menu. It doesn't pause between the chapters because its in one big Mpeg. If you try to do yours by several mpegs it's not called chapters it puts them as tracks and that why their is a pause between each mpeg.

I reackon it quite a powerful program that can do alot but does need to be improved in the motion menu creation as i think the quality doesn't look extremely as good as my captured VHs tape converted to svcd.
Those people that say VP5 sucks obviously does not know how to use it.
At first it looks quite complicated which to gave me the impression that it sucked especially because their crappy manual doesn't help you that much. But once you know how to use it. It's a whole lot better.
Thanks to Leebo and MegaBit for the help they gave in this post:

Follow Leebo's Megabits instructions and you to will know how to create chapters and menu icons to goto the chapter points.
