Because of many questions about attaching a HDD to a standalone DVDplayer I've made a short "how-2-do":
-Check if you can flash (update firmware) of your DVDplayer
-Check if the (new) firmware can handle single MPG(X/S)VCD/MP3/JPG files.
-Check if you DVDplayer has an IDE cable (open it dude!)
If so:
- Slave your HDD (jumper setting) and full format (no partitions) your IDE HDD (16/32 FAT)
- Use the voltage of your standalone DVDplayer OR BETTER use a external voltage. Use a SCSI case. Rip out the SCSI connectors and put your HDD in! Easy swapping!
Attach your HDD (use a PC IDE cable) and powerup your HDD and after booting (listen to it) powerup your standalone DVDplayer.
Hope ya have succes! It worked for me! Afreey-LD2060 player.
Got an 60GB HDD full with more than 1000 mp3's, many pictures and more than 15 XSVCD moviez! And still enough space left!
PS: Sorry about the lousy English...not my native language ya know! And be carefull! I am not responsible for any damage!

Good luck dude!

Do you know any other DVD players this will work with? Sounds intriguing. -
This is a cool hack, I posted it awhile ago in the DVD Hacks section under Sampo.
It uses the firmware from the new Sampo DVE631CF player. This player comes with a Compact Flash adapter to read JPEG images on a CF card from a digital camera. It turns out the CF reader in the DVE631CF is an IDE slave device. Therefore the firmware can recognize IDE slave connections unlike the firmware in most other players that use IDE drives.
The CF reader can be replaced with an IDE slave hard drive in the DVE631CF, and also the DVE631CF firmware can be flashed onto older Sampo players like the DVE620 and DVE660 and also several clones like the Afreey to enable them to connect an IDE slave hard drive.

can this only be done on Sampo players or can it be done on other dvd players....apex...phillips....sony...etc?
-
I feel this works out with players which have DVD ROMS. One way of checking this is if your DVD player can play MP3. Some players may have these as a "hidden" feature. INsert a CDROM and see if you can get an "Explorer type screen" come up on TV. Most possibly this hack can work on such drives.

Only works in Sampo models I listed plus several Sampo clones including Afreey.
It would not work in other brands because their hardware platform is different and firmware is hardware specific, like the BIOS in your PC or videocard.
Even the other brands that use IDE DVD drives probably don't support IDE slave devices. The Sampo DVE631CF does because it came with the CF reader as an IDE slave device.
You might be able to replace the DVD drive with an IDE hard drive on these other brands, instead of adding it as a slave drive. But even this may not work because DVD and hard drives are controlled somewhat differently. However the IDE CF reader in the Sampo acts like a hard drive so the Sampo firmware was designed to control a hard drive interface.
For other brands to work, the appropriate firmware would have to be developed or modified specifically for them.
The link I posted above has the details on which players work with Sampo DVE631CF firmware.

Thanks -
This would be great for me. Got a 75 gig hard drive with over 20,000 mp3's and 500 music vidz. I'll check this out.

I would love to put a boatload of VCD's onto the hard drive and not have to fuss with discs.
