sorry for being such a newb but i just got a toshiba d-r5 and i'm wondering if i can just use an hdmi cable to connect it to the tv? will i be able to use the recorder with just the hdmi cable?

I'm not sure what you are asking. I take it he Toshiba is a dvd recorder? What is the input device (cable box) to the recorder and does it accept HDMI cables. Does the recorder have HDMI inputs? At any rate the HDMI is just like any other cable only better, it is digital and transfers HD video and digital audio in one cable. It will transfer the highest quality signal of any other cable. But... it is only as good as the signal that was input.
