If I have a just one rar file such as .r05, and I know it contains a section of a much larger avi file - how can I play (essentially preview for quality evaluation) that one rar file??

I know that if you have a rar set for a dvd you can just look at whats in a single rar file by renaming it to .vob - yes that will usually play back in WinDVD, WMP, or whatever. Its a workaround for grabbing the entire rar set (too many gigs) and extracting the .img file or video_ts folder.

But how the heck can you do the same thing with a rar that contains an avi? Renaming it to .avi does not work as far as I know.

    Thanks...

In WinRAR, you can try 'Extract without confirmation', but without the rest of the RAR file, I doubt it will work.

The linux mplayer ( http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ ) usually can play these files. There is also a windows version.

Thanks to all for the info!

I had tried the keep broken files trick, but I think the reason I could not play the resulting files was because of the index issue. I will try the tip on fixing the index and see if that works.

It worked! The keep broken files trick works directly with an mpeg file, but with an avi you need to rebuild that index and you are good to go.
