I bought a Hauppauge WinTV PVR150 capture card, which has a hardware-based mpeg2 codec. That means it can convert incoming video on the fly.
I assumed I could use this hardware-based mpeg-2 codec to convert, say, avi files to mpeg2 instead of using Tsumani. Is that correct? If so, how do I do this? I can't find the mpeg2 hardware codec name in the list of video codecs in the Compression page of VirtualDub. At least, I don't think I can see the name.

You would need to hook your TV out upto the video input on the card, then play/record. That would mean realtime only encoding, which is perfectly possible with software encoders anyway (and without digital-->analogue-->digital).
