I was wondering if anyone had this model. The reason why I ask is because I can't seem to find a brand of DVD-R/DVD-RW to work. DVD-R/DVD-RW is the only type it says will record.
I also find that when I burn a video disk in my computer, it won't play on my Samsung recorder...it works in my other DVD player, does anyone know why? Thanks in advance.

I've had mine since May and have burned about 50 DVDs on it. I should hope that as long as they were 4x or slower they should work. But you're looking for a brand, I buy my media from supermediastore.com and they're called Taiyo Yuden Value DVD-R 4x. They come in 50 and 100 pack.

I haven't got anything but 16x value discs in well over 6 months, maybe a year. They are sold as 4x, but they are always 16x these days, at least the ones I've got in the last 10 or more orders.Originally Posted by MissIrisM

Thanks for the information. Are you saying they're selling me 16X discs for 4X? Do I have a fraud case against them, then? Because my drives don't read 16X, they read 4X and 8x.Originally Posted by samijubal

TY hasn't made 4x discs in around 2 years, they've been gone for a long time. I used to get 8x discs sometimes, but lately they've all been 16x. The only way you can tell the speed is with a PC burner and some sort of software, DVDInfoPro, DVD Decrypter, IMG Burn, etc.

samjubal, thanks, I do appreciate what you're saying. This is not good news for me, and I'm not a happy camper right now. This may be what's behind people thinking their equipment is bad. When I specify to a merchant that I want 4x, I expect 4X discs! I know they think they're doing me a favor by "upgrading" me, but unfortunately, my drives don't see it that way! It's a wonder my Samsung could record them at all, but on the other hand, the manual does say it supports high speed media. Still, I ordered lower speed media just for the fact that I would be copying my dubs and my broadcasts.Originally Posted by samijubal
This is upsetting! I have to buy a new external drive now to read 16X media! And supermediastore.com is going to get a strong piece of my mind! Selling 16X media masquerading as 4x is wrong!
Thanks again, samjubal, for the information. I've got a MacMini, by the way, so I don't believe that PC software is going to do me any good. Thanks, though. -
Just because you've got an 8x or 4x drive doesn't mean you can't use 16x discs, they will only burn at the max speed of the burner is all. If you've got the latest firmware for your burner, you should be able to use 16x discs.

That's good to know, but I'm still going to let the AG in on what Supermediastore.com is doing. That's just wrong.Originally Posted by samijubal
One more thing, if you don't mind: once my recorder has finalized it and turned it into DVD-Video, why does the speed of the disc still matter when I take it to my computer's external or internal DVD drive?
My apologies to the owner of this thread for asking so many questions, hopefully this will help you, too!
Thanks again samjubal for your help and advice. -
The speed of the disc doesn't matter. The only problem with 16x discs would be some standalones don't work well with them, if they work at all.
-
See, that's weird, because my Samsung has very few issues with these TY discs I'm using. Every now and then I get a "this didn't finalize because of error correction", but then I restart the finalize process and it goes through just fine. So, why the spotty behavior with the 8X Plextor and the DVD-ROM?Originally Posted by samijubal
Well, you guys have a great New Year, thanks for the input, and try not to stay up all night. I appreciate you! -
I have recorded successfully on Fuji's from Futureshop, as well as Vakoss DvD-R.

Now, that I don't know. I've only been using a year, since I bought my MacMini. Knowing Plextor, not a lot of time goes by before they come out with an entirely new model!Originally Posted by samijubal
The thing is, the Plextor recognizes the BLANK ones as being blank DVDs, and mounts them. What it won't do is mount some of the ones the Samsung burns. It's really hit or miss!
And now, the Samsung won't even play Netflix DVDs. Can any of this have anything to do with the anti-copy stuff they have built into these machines? Does it screw up over time and start corrupting the discs you burn?
