hi all, i downloaded a dvd that someone was sharing on another forum, and when i went to watch it in windows media player it said error downloading codec. then the movie played fine, but with NO sound.

so i asked for some help, and the guy told me to dl the 'KLITE MEGA CODEC', saying it would open anything i could imagine and solve problems.

anyways, i dont exactly know what a codec is, so i'm wondering if this would fix the problem? cause more problems?

any help is greatly appreciated. thanks a lot

Don't download a codec pack. That will only introduce more problems down the road.

Download gspot or avicodec. Then with the program open the video file. It will take a moment to read the file and it will tell you everything about the file itself. It will give you the audio and video codecs that make up the video. ONLY download the codecs you need. Chances are it will probably be xvid or divx.

If you are unsure you can post the results back on this website and one of us will be able to recommend the best codec for you to download.

But please DO NOT DOWNLOAD A CODEC PACK. You would regret it.

What yoda313 said. And 'just say NO' to codec packs.

As an alternative, you can also DL VLC Media Player. It uses it's own codecs, so no need to install any new ones. It's also freeware and plays most anything. Handy for unknown videos.

    And welcome to our forums.
