I have always been under the impression that + or - R DVD media was equal as far as reliability was concerned. That is, Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media was no better or worse than Taiyo Yuden DVD+R. However, the article on the attached web page link seems to suggest that the data reliability on +R is better than -R. Comments?

    I don't believe it :P

    Like this statement:

as electric noise in the laser pickup and wobbles introduced by the electric motor spinning the disc, these could easily be read as frequency changes in the real track itself.

    Pure and utter BS!

He doesn't even get his facts straight (dates/timelines, companies, actual technical names, etc).

Example: the "file system" of DVD-VIDEO on pressed discs is the same as on DVD-R (and the same as on DVD+R). He's getting DVD-VR and DVD+VR mixed in there. Similarly with the error correction and "wobble" business--incomplete and often wrong facts.

The reason I use DVD-R exclusively is because all commercial duplication uses DVD-R. When I first started burning DVD's I asked my commercial supplier which format other duplicators were using. I found that DVD-R won hands down. 8:1, now it's DVD-R exclusively, that' 100%.
Don't be confused by the price. Rima has inkjet DVD-R 8x TY at $33/100 and inkjet DVD+R TY at $42/100. You might assume that the +R are better because they cost more. That's not the case. Price is just about quantity/volume, period. The DVD-R cost less because they are made in much greater quantity. The only market for DVD+R is in retail stores selling to the hobbyists.
The article implying that DVD+R is somehow superior is BS, subjective and irrelevent. Also, once burnt there is no difference between +R and -R.
I have never purchased a DVD+R and never will. The format war is over and DVD-R won. May DVD+R rest in peace.

The only use I've found for +R is copying +RW or -RW LiteOn 5005 recordings which will not play on a Toshiba player I have that wil also not play +R except when recorded as DVD-ROM book type. This is the only solution I've found for that problem.

The real difference is that DVD+R finalize at a much faster rate; thus quickening the burn procedure by about 30 seconds.

  7. Not true on my burns, +R is definitely slower, about twice as long.
The Rs finish the burn and immediately finalize, the +Rs have to close the track then finalize.

I've only bought one pack of +R media (TYs) and quit burning on them after having playback problems: Even using booktyping, I saw problems on nearly half the players that I tried the discs on; never an issue with -R media. Your own results may vary.

    That's pure BS.

When I record 5 minutes video on my JVC -R/-RW/-RAM stand alone DVD recorder it takes 13 ******* minutes to finalize -R/-RW disk.
When I record 5 minutes video on my LiteOn +R/+RW recorder I don't have to finalize +RW disk at all, and it takes about 5 minutes to close +R disk.

I have to agree with MozartMan. I burn both +R and -R 8x TY disks on two separate dvd burners and the -Rs take forever compared to the +Rs to finalize. As for the burn itself, no difference.

BTW, to address the original poster, it is the consensus around here that 8x TY +Rs have been consistently more reliable than TY -Rs due to their own production process. However, Verbatim -Rs are considered AS GOOD AS TY +Rs in the field.

    So...
    TY +R or
    Verbatim -R
    for the utmost quality
Matters of great concern should be taken lightly.

Agreed, on stand-alone it takes forever for -R.
The only reason I have +R/RW is for use on my Liteons.(stand-alone)
I do have few D/L discs that are +R also...for PC use.

And I don't know about that slacker...I have NO probs with my -R TY media in my PC.

    And for videobread...

Any small business owner would go for the less expensive media all other things being equal. Commercial duplicators use -R because it is cheaper, NOT better.

Don't be confused by the price. Rima has inkjet DVD-R 8x TY at $33/100 and inkjet DVD+R TY at $42/100. You might assume that the +R are better because they cost more. That's not the case. +Rs are more expensive because of the higher patent costs associated with +R media. Production volumes can also a factor. But volumes are tied not only to demand but also manufacturing supply. There are more manufacturers producing -Rs.

The article implying that DVD+R is somehow superior is BS, subjective and irrelevent. Also, once burnt there is no difference between +R and -R.
The article is not subjective and irrelevant, simply NOT articulated well. Maybe with some mis-information thrown in. I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water.

I have never purchased a DVD+R and never will. The format war is over and DVD-R won. May DVD+R rest in peace.
That is ashame. My Made in Japan TY 8x +Rs have outlasted every other brand/format I have purchased over the last three years. I have no regrets. Again, I do purchase and like Verbatim -Rs as well.

    vico1,

Can't argue with you since there are so many variables. Looking at dvd burner reviews over a period of years at CDFreaks, I believe burners favor one or the other format in general. My dvd burners seem to favor +R over -R. I have never had issues with TY +Rs but have had finalizing issues with TY -Rs. May just be my hardware and firmware setup.

True...My PCs running two Pioneers. (both with hacked firmware)
Then again, mine might like +R TY too...I don't know, never buy anything other
than -R TY (printable) because of price and the good performance I've had.

I'm also under the impression (from what I've read) that -R has better cross-compatibility
with stand-alone DVD players than +R...but I can not confirm this.
