hello, i have an avi video where the picture seems flatten, i mean all the figures are small and large. I think i need to increase the height of the picture. I tried using virtualdubmod, and i can get it better... but i don't know what could be the correct height size.

Is there a tools that can help me and that also has a visual resizing or a preview?
Is there a way to find a correct height or width of an avi knowing the other side measure?

    thanks

Use Gspot to get the videos sttributes and put the results here. Most likely either A)the aspect ratio is set wrong, B)your player is not respecting it or C)your player settings are incorrect.

The resolution of a video is not necessarily the size at which it is played.

  4. There's probably no way of knowing what the correct DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) should be, you'll have to eyeball it. Look for a scene where there is something with a known shape. A sphere (should always appear circular on screen), a tire viewed directly from the side, etc. Use that to determine the proper aspect ratio.

  5. Hi-

Since it's 512x400, which is 1.28:1, and since a PAL DVD is 720x576 (1.25:1), then some idiot just resized it, but kept the same ratio. If you can find the DVD at a retail place, like Amazon.com, or check at IMDB (or even tell us the name of the movie), then you most likely can find out the real aspect ratio, and will know how to resize it. For example, if it's 1.33:1 (not very likely), then it should be 512x384. If 1.85:1, then 512x288 will be good enough. If 2.35:1, then maybe 512x224 or thereabouts.

And as jagabo said, finding something that's supposed to be round and adjusting the resize until it's really round is a good way.

ok, i found the aspect ratio.. its 1.78:1. now? how can i fix it? with what tool?

  8. Just because the movie was shot with an AR of 1.78:1 doesn't necessarily mean your file should have that DAR. Whoever ripped it may have done any number of things to mess up the AR.

Once you know the proper DAR you can fix the video by resizing and reencoding with VirtualDubMod (since you have it). If it's an XVID AVI file you can use MPEG4Modifier to change the DAR without reencoding. Not all players will respect that though.

  9. The reviews I've read say it's variously 1.74:1, 1.78:1, and 1.85:1. I think you'd be safe using 512x288, or some other resolution with a similar ratio (624x352), with the understanding, as jagabo notes, that you'll never know exactly what was done to it by the original encoder (who didn't know the first thing about encoding, as he made it 512x400 (unless he was expecting you to use your player to resize it)).

Or, as he also says, use MPEG4Modifier to set the DAR without reencoding, but be limited to computer playback, as most standalone DVD/MPEG-4 players won't play it properly.
