Hello! I have transferred all my family's old 8mm film to Mini DV cassettes, and I'm about to get started editing. All I need to do is cut and rename the AVI files, add audio and maybe add some basic titles to the beginning of the video. I know Adobe Premiere is one of the better programs. I'm willing to spend money on good software, but I'm just not sure I'd use all of Premiere's features. What program do you think is best for these basic editing needs? (If your vote is definitely for Premiere, that's fine.)

Also, I have already purchased Canopus ProCoder to convert the AVI to MPEG for my DVDs. Do you think I'm ok with Canopus or would you recommend something else?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

    Hi toscano,

    Check out:

    1) Premiere Elements - it's a scaled down version of Premiere Pro.
    2) Avid Free DV - Free DV editing software that sounds fairly well featured.
    3) Many of of the other tools in the "Video Editors (Advanced)" category of the "Tools" section are free, cheap, not neccessarily difficult and more than capable of doing what you want.

Canopus ProCoder is considered one of the few in the "best" group.

A little more flexible but in the same market space as Premiere Elements is Sony Vegas Movie Studio

The only issue I have with Avid Free DV is it's hardware requirements can preclude you from using it.

WAX2 might be worth a look for titles
