Macs certainly "recognize" mpeg2 -- that's what DVDs are encoded in! Certain programs, however, may not natively handle mpeg2 video. Quicktime, for example, requires an upgrade (via a transfer of $$ to Apple) to do so.

If your sony outputs dvd-compliant mpeg2, then it sounds as if you only have to author the file as dvd, then burn the result. FfmpegX does a fine job of authoring. And you already have Toast, so you should be good to go.

Another thing to check is whether your standalone player can play the particular type of disc you're burning. Some players are very fussy about which media they'll accept. For instance, some will work with DVD-R, but not DVD+R, or vice-versa, and sometime only with certain brands. Computer drives tend to be a bit less fussy, so that can also explain why your burned dvds are readable in your computer, but not by the standalone player.

I believe VLC will play the mpeg2 files. Alternatively, pay Apple the $20 ($30?) for their MPEG2 component. It does work great and lets apps like MPEG Streamclip work with such files in order to trancode them for iPod (for example). Worth the money.
