    JVC MV7S combo unit.

I have not seen much user feedback on this unit.

I was wondering if this would be a good unit to purchase for converting VHS tapes to DVD's?

I have a lot of recorded TV stuff from the mid 90's, and am wanting to get rid of the tapes and convert to DVDs.

I have some tapes with three different programs on them and was wondering if this unit allows any editing so that I could choose what I wanted to put on the DVD?

Has anyone purchased this unit, and has any comments about it? good or bad

I am quite a newbie to this type of thing, and want a unit that is simple to use.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations as to which 'store' would be a place to purchase from?

Thank you for any comments that you might make.

Guess I will post my own reply.

I purchased the JVC DRMV7S unit.

I cannot make a valid judgement about this unit, as yet.

It arrived packaged with an outer box. Somewhere along the shipment process it took quite a 'hit'. The outer box, on one end caved in, and the force of the impact, whatever it was, actually damaged the interior factory box.

I did try to use the unit and it did actually work. I did have one issue that required me to RMA the unit and ask for a replacement. That issue was that when playing a VHS tape there was a white 'noise' at the bottom of the screen. I tried to adjust the tape tracking, but it did not work. I then took the same tape to my other VCR and it adjusted the tracking, automatically, and played without the white 'noise' being present.

Should I receive an undamaged unit and it does not replicate the white 'noise' issue that I had with the first unit I will be quite happy with the unit.

It does not have "FR mode" like older DR-M10 and DR-M100 units. (or the combo units MV1 and MV5).

    Some Walmarts carry these.

    Thanks for your input.

As my 'newbie' experience in this area is stated; what is FR mode?

Does this mean that the MV7S unit will not automatically adjust the VHS tracking? (as my older VCR does, but is not a dual unit).

I noticed in the user manual that it said to adjust the tape tracking to use the + and - buttons on the remote to do so. I tried this and it did not correct the problem.

The vendor told me that if it had the white 'noise' that I said it had, JVC would have done a complete recall of all the units that they have sold. Hence I said to send me a replacement unit.

Maybe I should ask for a refund instead?

    Yeah my Walmart carried this.
The deal breaker for me was a lack of s-video input/output in the back, I think there may have been only an input or something like that.

FR mode means you can record record any length of time in 5-min increments. I can use FR180, for example, to record 3 hours of video.

The VCR found in ALL DVD RECORDER COMBO UNITS are low-end gear. You'll never be truly happy with a combo from anybody. You need a good VCR. Combos are notoriously crappy.

If you keep it, just use the DVD recorder part. Get a good VCR to feed it a signal.

  7. Picked up one to try out the VHS HDMI capability. Tossed in a prerecorded VHS copy of LOR. On a Sony 50" LCD, the PQ was noticably less grainy than usual but suffered from ugly color saturation. Yuk! A color adjustment took care of it but what a hassle. Also got "cannot record" error on DVD side when trying to record from HBO. So. back it went.
