    Hi,
I hope someone could help me:

With VirtualDub (v1.6.17) I joined 7 *.avi movies (from my digital camera). I've cutted them with VirtualDub so that they fit perfectly together.

After that I've chosen (or do you say choosed?) a single (external) *.wav file as music part. I've set everything in VirtualDub - the rendering worked.

My problem: VirtualDub cutted the same parts out of the *.wav file as I've cutted out of the joined avi files. As you can guess the *.wav is a song and I don't want it to be cutted also - it should sound continuous.

Is there a way/method/setting to avoid this circumstance?
I've used VirtualDub because it supports DivX and XviD compression - if there is a better freeware program for cutting pls let me know.

    Thanks!
PS: Hope my English is not too broken - fell free to correct me me .

  2. Hi-

You can't join a complete audio file to a video in the process of being cut. You're converting to XviD or DivX, you say? Here's how I would do it:

Open the various AVIs, make all the cuts, and save with Direct Stream Copy. Play it (especially at the cut and join points) and make sure it's OK. Open the new cut and joined AVI and compress how you normally do (to XviD or whatever). When done, mux in the audio. You could do the audio along with the video, but I prefer not to.

If you plan on converting the WAV audio to something else (MP3 or AC3 audio, for example), do it outside of VDub maybe using BeSweet.

Thanks for the fast reply manono!

Yes, I'm converting to XviD or DivX - I guess that's the best quality/filesize level.

The reason why I choosed a .wav file was because VirtualDub only got the option (open) 'WAV Audio' in the audio menue. I installed the lame codec so I can choose it in Virtualdub. In general I'm using WaveLab for all the audio related stuff (I'm totally new to video cutting).

So, did I understood you right: 1st save the file as Direct Stream Copy (1.avi). Then I open 1.avi, check the intersections and compress it (e.g. with DivX => save as 2.avi). After that I open 2.avi and add the audio from the wave file (the result is 3.avi). Does that produce a loss in quality each time it get's saved? Or will the video file not get compressed again when I add the audio data in the last step?

Edit: Hmm, 'muxing in' the Audio doesn't really work - the result is mute. I guess it is because of the settings or the workflow - have to go to bed now - useless at this time

  4. Hi-

Maybe you misunderstood. Maybe I misunderstood. First get the video out of the way. You said you had 7 different videos that were all appended and had pieces cut out. You can do all that at once. Then, after you have them the way you like, set Video for Direct Stream Copy, go File->Save As (or whatever VDub calls it), and save it. At that point, after testing to be sure, you should have the video just the way you want it.

Now open the cut and joined AVI in VDub(Mod), set it up for conversion to XviD or DivX, and do the encoding. When all done, add in the audio. It should be easy to mux in the audio. I'm not sure why you'd get mute WAV audio.
