I have a satellite receiver and have split its AV signal using a Y-adapter and its feeding two DVR's (Pioneer 233-s and 540-s). I noticed the 540-s signal is a bit wonky. It's mostly noticeable if I display a solid background like the satellite guide. The brightness goes up and down slightly and there is a vertical darker bar moving right to left across the screen. Almost like the old macrovision problems that occurred if you copied a protected VHS tape except not nearly as severe.
What's causing this? Is there a simple remedy. Also if I unplug the AV cable going into the 233-s then this problem on hte 540-s will go away.

If the satellite receiver has an RF output run one of those to one of the DVD recorders. That way you don't have to split the signal which decreases its output to each recorder. This also is a good argument for an AV receiver which can serve several video outputs without decreasing the signal strength. Radio Shack may also have some AV switchers that will accomplish this without the loss one gets using Y splitters.

Which satellite receiver? My old Dishnetwork 7100 has dual outputs and never had such problems. Ditto on many older units that also have dual outputs. Such a shame they seem to have discarded dual outputs on most newer receivers.....
