Newbie, here. I probably don't know what I am talking about, but here it goes:

I have a Philips DVD Player, model 724AT. I am trying to play a DVD in PAL format (from UK). I was under the impression that I could play PAL format DVD on it. On the back it says Zone 1 (which is know is US territory), so how do I play this? I usually get a blank screen with occasional sound.

My tv is a Samsung Tantum 57" HDTV rear projection model. I can't find any settings in the menu options to change formats, so I assume it is only NTSC compatible.

On the DVD player, I went in the menu and selected video output "multi" just in case, where it will play either NTSC or PAL. No dice.

I also tried the hacker 1111 and 0 code (that I got of this website) to adapt to 0 region, but nothing happened. Am I missing the boat here?

I am confused. Is this going to ever work? Am doing something wrong or just wasting time? Should I buy another DVD player that says it converts PAL to NTSC?

Again, I want to play PAL format from UK DVD's on my American tv (as I live in North Carolina). Can it be done with what I have? If not, what do I need?

Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Assuming the firmware isn't locked on your model, the hack code you are using should change it to region 0.

I don't know how to verify the region on this model. It may be displayed in the setup menu.

Typically, when a non supported region disc is played in most players, you get an error message stating "improper region" or something similar. That doesn't appear to be the case with this model. It seems to just "play" the disc anyway, although it can't play it properly.

Many of the reviews say this model can play PAL. If the hack code isn't working for you, then I expect you have a newer version that is now locked.

You can do a search in the DVD Players section for other players. Just choose "multisystem" as one of your specs.

For the record, I have two of the DVP642's. They do a decent job of PAL playback. I also have an Oppo 971, which is an excellent player and has excellent PAL playback.
