Let me try this a differant way...

Out of the following Video Support Formats...

    (DivX™ 4 & 55, XviD5, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG4-SP, WMV9, Motion-JPEG)

Which has the best quality picture and sound or are they all the same, just differant formats?

Hardly the same but I think you're missing the point of the different formats, each has it's own little niche. For example:

MPEG-1- Used for either VCD, it's biggest draw that is often overlooked is it will play on just about any machine on the planet. Downside is large file sizes compared to DIVX or WMV
MPEG-2 - Required for compliant DVD but has larger file size compared to formats like Divx or WMV
WMV- Roughly the same quality of MPEG2 at 1/4 the file size, good for web video because it compresses so well and is playable on most machines.
Divx- Similar attributes to WMV, has it's own little niche for all the MS haters out there. :P One of it's biggest draws besides the small file size is that some DVD players are compatible with it. Drawback, at least from a web designers point of view is that the codec is not as widely distributed as WMV..

They all have there pro's and con's. Which to choose depends on where you want to go with it...

As far as audio quality goes again it depends where you want to go with it and what format audio you use. WMA audio used for WMV's for example produces outstanding quality audio at very low bitrates but that would be irrelevant if you wanted to put your video on DVD since it never enters the picture.

Absolute best video and audio can be achcied by using uncompresssed AVI with a uncompressed WAV audio file bu that is hardly practical because of the enormous file size.

Thank you so much, very useful info...

Can you recommend a good converter that goes from a DVD (or a HDD file copy of a DVD made with DVD Decrypter) to WMV?
