  1. During my16 month stay in Thailand my Sony PC101 video camer eventually stoped working.
That is the tape drive refused to work. So started using it every day to take a few picture or some low budget video to the small 8mb memory stick.
I have quite a few of these low quality clips now and would like to edit the better ones together.
Should it be possible to edit these ? Can I convert them somehow?
I am presently using Pinacle studio 8.

    Any help apreciated.

It's possible to edit any video and do whatever you want with it but end results will vary depending on what you have and where you are going with it. The issue with that type of video is both the framerate and resolution are generally not suitable for conversion to DVD. It can be done but again results will vary. Editing for playback on Computer should give you some decent results.

FYI . *.jpg is an image file, what extension do the videos have? You can use gspot to try and identify what you have. Post the results here and someone will be able to give you some better advice since the file format and specs are important as to what you can do with it.

Ooops of course that's an image file Lets edit that to *.mpg
And I would be happy just to see edited for desk top viewing.

I ran the program but couldn't quite figure out the export feature, I'm a little tired just now maybe another day. Heres some on the info provided.
    MPEG-1 System Stream << { 1 vid, 1 aud }
    Sys Bitrate: 728 kb/s
    hxw 320 x 240
25 pics per second , 25 frames per second.

If Pinacle is not able to deal with this material anyone know a free tool I could use ?

Not sure about pinnacle but whatever you use you want something that will only reencode whatever you edit. That will maintain the current quality and not make it worse. To do that yuo generally have to match the output properties to your current properties.

Try the free Cuttermaran or pay for Womble editors, both are specifically for MPEG.

-or- the free trial for Ulead Video Studio, look in the manual for the "smart render" feature. This aop will also allow you to get to VCD or DVD but again don't expect much. the biggest issue you have is the odd framerate.

Pinnacle "smart" encoding is NOT reliable in version 9, not sure about version 8.
It was reported by many to re-encode the entire clip, rather than just a few edited frames.

You can find some threads about work-arounds at the Pinnacle forum, but it might be better to get a dfferent software that you can rely on to not re-encode your untouched mpeg segments.
