  1. My wife made the mistake of pressing the backlight button on our camcorder to film the footage of our son's first musical recital which was presented in a very well light room. Very disappointed in the footage I downloaded. I tried to apply a video effect in Premiere (minus 75 on the brightness) but all it does is make the image darker. Everyone's faces are still washed out. I have a feeling that there's no way to restore this, but I just wanted to make sure so I thought I'd ask.

Worst case, we'll have to ask some of the other parents that taped their kids to let me borrow the footage for one night so I can dump it to my hard drive.

You might want to try the VirtualDub filter 'Levels'. It does contrast, brightness, and gamma adjustments all in one filter and is very easy to use. The nice thing about Levels is that it works in brightness only leaving the color information intact.

    Good luck

As the video is probably DV, you might be able to apply a mask type of filter with VirtualDub and make some improvement. But usually if the light parts are very 'thin' with not much detail remaining, it's hard to fix that as the data is missing.

I don't know exactly which filter would work, this is just a general suggestion.

VD filters here: http://neuron2.net/ and here: http://www.hlinke.de/Home_e/Vdub-Filterlist/vdub-filterlist.html

With VD or my favorite VirtualDub Mod, you need to install a DV codec. I use Panasonic DV Codec, but others will work, also.

lordsmurf's site also has some good info: http://digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/restoration/video/intro.htm

And since this is restoration, I'll move you to our Restoration Forum, where you may get more responses.

bright white faces are pretty much just that. white with no color info or contrast. you can't restore what isn't there to begin with just like you thought.

You don't say which version of Premiere you have... But in Premiere Pro 1.5 there's a Video Effect in the "Adjust" section called "Shadow / Highlight" - try that...

I'd just go for plan B, borrow tapes from other parents. Sometimes restoring is avoidable simply by finding better sources. This sounds like a possibility in this case.

And make your wife read the camera manual.
