  1. I'm pretty sure multiple audio tracks can exist in a VOB file, but what about MPG? or AVI?

I'm finding that when I play an MPG file that was produced from a VOB file, the wrong language is heard. I'd like to find out whether the conversion process is selecting an arbitrary audio track, or if my player is simply choosing the wrong track. Is there a tool like GSpot for MPG files?

Version 2.60 of Gspot can read MPEGs. It may just tell you you have more than one audio, though. I'm not sure how many audio tracks you can have with MPEGs. I think Divx can only have two, Divx 6 may handle more. With a OGM file and Ogg audio, you can have quite a few. You may not find much except software players that can sort them all out, though. VOBs can have multiple audio tracks, subtitles and other files muxed in with the video.

I drop them into VirtualDub Mod and it usually shows all the audio tracks in 'Streams'. You could then delete the ones you don't want and demux, or save as a WAV the right one. Then mux it back in with another program. VDM doesn't output MPEG formats. I save out as WAV format, then convert that to AC3 audio with ffmpeggui. You can either mux that back in, or if your final destination is a DVD, let your authoring program join the audio and MPEG video.
