  1. Using TMPEGnc DVD Author, I've combined a few clips, edited them and want to create an oversized DVD file. The size of the file is going to be 10603MB. After running it through DVD shrink, I want to burn it to a double layer DVD.

I've done this before and it's worked fine. This time though, as I'm outputting the "pre-shrunk" DVD file with TMPEG, I get an error at the 60% done point saying that it can't continue becaue the file is too big.

Before it starts to output I get the file too big warning, but I tell it to ingore and continue.

Theres plenty of room on my hard drive, so thats not it. I'm stumped,so any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I had Author crash one time trying the same as you and I thought I had reached some limit of the program in max filesize or something. I too was over 10GB.

There is a work around though. Simply shrink 1 or both of the movies the needed amount first, then author. I think that is what I finally did to finish the project. Its just a matter of doing some calculator time, thats all.

    Good luck.

  3. Thanks. I'll try that.

Mine didn't actually crash, but I got an error message of:

"Can't write more files because this will make the volume of the DVD too big".

Did you get this or did it actually crash on you?

The error message just like you. I think it is a total filesize limit.

Just calculate how much you need to shrink one of the files then author it alone in a new project. Run Shrink on that and get it down to the size it needs to be in the finished project. Import that shrunken DVD_Video and add your other files like you want your DL disk to be. This way the total filesize of the DL project will be under 10GB and will then probably author ok.

When you go to shrink the second time just don't shrink that part of the video again. Select "No Compression" for it. Just shrink the rest of the video files as you must to make it fit. I mean, don't shrink that track again, just shrink the other tracks that haven't been shrunken yet so this project will fit.

If the total was 10GB and your disk is 8GB then you need a 20% reduction in filesize. The portion you shrink first would need to show 80% compression and a 20% reduction in filesize.

    You know what I mean.....

    Good luck.

  5. Thanks for the tip. Worked nicely. I'm still curious about if TMPEGnc Author has some sort of file size limit built in. I'm still using 1.5. Any thoughs from anyone on if I should upgrade to 2.

I'm confused as why you don't create the correct file size right from the get go. Why encode then transcode? A double hit like that will affect quality.
