so my flat screen monitor crapped out on me.. all of a sudden it just wouldnt turn on
what i was thinking it could be and hoping maybe some of you would know is - ya know the cord plug in that has what looks like a small plug and then a bigger component for power that then goes to the wall, could that maybe have burned out?
where can i find one cheap? ya know the power supply extension for the monitor (im thinking that just went out and it's not my actual screen)

It could be many things. Is it under warranty?
It could be the power supply. See if you can borrow another to test.
It could be the LCD backlight or the DC to AC inverter driving the backlight. In this case you would still see come characters on the black screen under external light. This might be user fixable.

Anything could be possible ... but
Cord's do flake out .
The power on button may be the cause .
Power supply circuit may have shorted to earth ... diode replacement .
Anything beyond this would cost as much as a new replacement to repair . -
Thanks for the replies guys, yeah im leaning towards it being the power supply or like one of you stated the power button. because my screen showed no signs of characters or being discolored it just simply went blank/black.
and no it isnt under warranty anymore - im probably going to purchase a power supply and try that, if it is indeed to do with the screen or power button as mentioned any ideas how much itd roughly cost to get it fixed? otherwise if to high i'm probably out of luck -
Figure computer repair labor rates are similar to auto repair in your area. Out here that may be $80-$130/hr. Then add parts.

power supply? Do you mean power cord? Because the power supply is inside the LCD cabinet. I seriously doubt it's a power cord issue. Probably best to just throw it away and get a new one. You can get a 19" for around $200 or less now.

Some LCD monitors have a brick AC to DC supply. I thought that is what he meant. If so, it should be easy to test with a voltmeter.

That is what ive got the AC to DC supply, checked out comp usa and best buy today and neither of them have it. they said ive got to get it from the manafacturer?? i have no idea where to look

Two choices, buy it from the manufacturer or reverse engineer it and find something with similar specs online. A computer shop could probably figure out if the problem is the power supply. Replacement would probably be around $50.

If it's the type of 'power brick' that has multiple connections, you would probably have to get it from the manufacturer, which may take a while and not be cheap. I would take the PS to a shop or somebody that knows how to use a voltmeter and see if it is working first. If it is, then you have other problems. If it just has a single connector, like 12VDC, then you could use a power supply from Radio Shack or similar, as long as it had the proper voltage and amperage specifications. They have adapters for the ends.
For manufacturer parts, get the serial/ID number from the brick and put that into Google. You might luck out and get a link. Or do a search for '(exact name of the monitor), power supply' or '(exact name of the monitor), parts'. Sometimes you can go to the monitor manufacturer's website and 'support' and they may have a parts site. -
You can also do one thing to eliminate a bad inverter. At night in the total darkness turn the tv on and using a flashlight try to see anything on the display. If you see any waek image at all than you have a bad inverter. Its an easy fix to me
