I want to sell a download of a dvd on my web site. The buyer would
purchase the download, be given a password or confirmation number and
then be able to download the file and save it for future unlimited viewings.
I have found many products which will convert the dvd to various formats that can
then be viewed via various plug in players ON web sites.
If the download is to be sold and saved to the hard drive of the purchaser for future viewings,
would the file formats be the same? Which format is best to use? Are there instructions anywhere as to how to best accomplish this type of download?
    Thanks in advance

If they will be saving them to their HD, then you can use whatever format you like. Typically avi or wmv would give you the smallest file size while retaining quality.

All you then need on your webpage is a link to the file. Click and download, just like every other web page.

For obvious reasons, you should only be doing this with material that you have created and own. You cannot legally do this with any dvds you have purchased.

check with your hosting company to see how much bandwidth/speed you have. uploading full length movie files in any format that is worth watching is a long process especially if you are speed capped.

divx at about 700mb for a 4.5gb dvd is about as low in size you could ask money for.

if speed/bandwidth is not a problem, make an iso of your dvd and up them the full quality.
