I have some dvd's that I have encoded to a XviD .avi file and some of them don't have any standalone support enabled (ESS or MTK/Sigma).
I need standalone support but I'm wondering if I could enable standalone support by some easy way? Without having to rip the dvd again or completely re-encode the .avi file?
I'm on 1ghz intel pentium III so it takes really long time if I have to fully encode everything again.

Is there any magical solution or do I have to encode everything again?

    Thanks in advance

If they have GMC or Qpel and your dvd player doesn't support it you need to reencode.

Are you sure they wont play ? Standalone support isn't some magic switch you turn on or off, it's just another way of encoding. These may already work.

If not, AVIRecomp is a simple way to re-encode them for standalone playback. But it is going to be slow no matter what you do.

I have a iRiver PMP-120 and I when I don't encode with standalone support the .avi file does play, I hear the audio fine but the video does appear as just green lines. I can post screenshot or record a video of my iriver playing if you would like to see how it looks?
When I enable standalone support in autoGK this doesn't happen and my video plays correctly.
So I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the standalone support :P

However I'm not completely sure about what you are talking about Baldrick, I'm not sure what GMC and Qpel is.

They are encoding features that some players cannot handle on playback, or can only handle if implemented in a certain way.

If you have AutoGK then you may as well use it to re-encode, instead of avirecomp.

Mpeg4Modifier or the latest g-spot (2.60b) can tell you if GMC or QPel were used when encoding.

ah, ok.. I get it now, thanks guns1inger

but about autogk, it's extremely slow for me. Taking many hours to re-encode a single 700mb .avi movie.
I have been using iriverter to re-encode avi files because it's working really fast for me.
However iriverter is quite buggy and has only 3 available resolutions that I can choose (320x240, 512x384, 640x480).
Since I would like my widescreen videos to have widescreen resolution, 576x304 etc. Then I can't use iriverter.
Is there any other encoder out there I can use that is as fast as iriverter (iriverter is a GUI frontend for mencoder so there must be some encoder out there that I can use)

SUPER and MediaBuilder are both mencoder front ends. Might be worth a look.
