Is it possible to install a 512MB DDR PC400 with a 512MB DDR2 533 in one LGA Socket 775 Mainboard?
Have 2.88G Pentium Dual Core running windows xp professional. Adding to my 512MB DDR PC400 with 512MB DDR2

Probably not.
I believe the mobo will not accept. You have to choose one of them.
At least that's what I had to do when I had an ECS K7S5A Pro mobo, had to choose DIMM or DDR. It applies for all I think. -
no. i'd like to see the motherboard that would accept ddr+ddr2 x.O

If you had slots for both types they'd still be either or but not both. If you only have the DDR2 slots then you'd have to force it in and most likely damage the Mobo.
They are different elecrically and physically. Different number of contacts for example.
Just bite the bullet and buy another DDR2 if you feel a need for more memory.
I did a test in the real world not benchmarks where I went from 1 Gig ram to 2 gigs of ram in the machine I use all the time.
What difference did I see? None. YMMV of course. I can do this sort of test as I can just pull it from stock to test and return it when done. I'll be doing a nother test on a Celeron 2.53 system that now has 512 and doubling it to 1 gig. In this case I expect it to be faster and more responsive. Of course I may also change the motherboard to have a testbed with IDE and SATA ports as I'm thinking of doing a used Celeron 2.2Ghz to sell as used at work and why use a new mobo when I need SATA in my test computer. I see no ethical problems as it will be sold as used, and in fact the CPU, Case, HDD and Optical drives are used.
Anyway, I'd increase to 1 gig of memory but use the right memory. -
For encoding MPEGs or others, I generally see about 300MB maximum memory used. Much more and it just sets there, doing nothing. For some programs like Photoshop that hold files in memory, then more is useful. Vista may be able to use more, but it would depend on the program you are running. Most of the time with XP, more than 1GB is just a waste of money.
I would get a faster CPU if you want to increase encode speed. More memory won't help, AFAIK.
DDR2 uses 240 pin memory. DDR uses 182 pin memory. For that and other reasons, they are not compatible with each other. -
redwudz: Did you ever wonder why we still say things like 240 pin memory? It has all had edge contacts since computers stopped using memory in sets of 9 chips that had pins on the edge that plugged into sockets.
